Whenever I see a woman put down her pocketbook on the table in a restaurant, I can’t help wondering if it had not been on the floor of the stall in a public washroom a short while ago in its peregrination where the hook for hanging it was missing or broken, and hope sincerely that anyone who habitually puts her pocketbook on a table instinctively refrains from placing it down on the floor anywhere or, vice versa, anyone who is not mindful about putting it on the floor never ever thinks of depositing it on a tabletop.
